Tugboat towers
Recently Hodgdon Yachts took on construction of steel tugboat pilot house towers for neighboring shipyard Washburn and Doughty. These mammoth towers, too big to erect on the hull until after launch of the tug, are being constructed and outfitted with systems, electrical, electronics, joinery and final paint prior to lifting aboard the tug hull. This process, commonly referred to as pre-outfit, assists Washburn and Doughty schedule requirements. After final paint the pilot house towers will erect, by means of a large mobile crane, to achieve completion work on the tug hull.
This collaborative effort of neighboring shipyards is one example of the extensive resources and capabilities of Maine shipyards. The first and second towers for the ATB tugs were delivered prior to the devastating fire at Washburn & Doughty, the third tower is under way. More importantly the rebuilding and construction effort next door continues, soon they will be up and running at full capacity in a brand new facility
